Slava Voynov, a 24-year-old defenseman for the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings, has been suspended indefinitely for a domestic violence incident that involved his wife, Marta Varlamova, on October 19. Details that are leaking from court today paint a scary picture of what happened that night, and make Los Angeles’ move to allow him to skate with the team seem worse in retrospect.
According to tweets by NHL writers from Los Angeles County Superior Court in Torrance, California, Voynov punched his wife at a party, then beat her more when they arrived home.
According to the tweets Voynov pushed her into a television, opening up a gash on her head that required eight stitches. He also reportedly punched her in the face, kicked her several times, and choked her three times. The tweets indicated the scene was bloody; there was blood on the couple’s comforter as well as a bloody handprint on the floor.

Furthermore, the judge indicated there is evidence of prior abuse from Voynov, and ruled there was sufficient evidence for the case to move to trial. Voynov is now facing a count of felony count of corporal injury to spouse, and will be arraigned on December 29.
Originally, Voynov’s wife did not want charges to be filed. She declined a personal protection order against Voynov and asked that he not be charged through her personal attorney. On December 2, the Kings allowed Voynov to skate with his teammates, a direct violation of his paid, indefinite suspension. They were fined $100,000.
