Oklahoma native son and L.A. Dodgers star outfielder Matt Kemp is facing backlash of his own after angry followers attacked him on Twitter over his “cheap” donation to tornado relief victims.
Earlier this week, Kemp pledged $1,000 for every home run he hits from now until the All-Star break and encouraged storm ravaged of his hometown to remain strong. That same day, Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant donated $1 million to the cause.
Generous as they both may be, the discrepancy was not lost on critics who instantly took to Twitter to lambast Kemp, scheduled to make $21.5 million this season, according to BustedCoverage.com.
The Kemp backlash comes only days after he was lauded in the media for his interaction with a young cancer stricken boy he met at a recent game. After being told of the boy’s condition, Kemp spent several minutes greeting the boy and his father and eventually gave him his game-worn uniform, cleats and hat.
Kemp and the Dodgers have had their struggles this season. After being picked by many as a World Series favorite, the Dodgers have languished near the cellar for most of the season manager Don Mattingly is now thought to be fighting to keep job.
