Canelo Alvarez Next Fight: Miguel Cotto Accused Of Ducking Big Fight?

Canelo Alvarez is pushing hard for a fight between himself and Miguel Cotto, the WBC middleweight champion of the world. This bout would be expected to rekindle the burning rivalry between Mexican and Puerto Rican boxing, but negotiations have slowed to a crawl.

Alvarez has taken to the media in an effort to pick up the pace, and made a play at Cotto's fighting pride.

"I don't understand what's happening," Alvarez said of the slowdown. "I already granted Miguel Cotto a lot of things to make this fight happen. It's been more than a month, and Miguel Cotto hasn't signed the contract."

Cotto recently said that any talks of a fight being ready to go on May 2 was just "speculation," while both fighters are believed to have options aside from one another. Either man would be able to make a fight with WBA and IBO champion Gennady Golovkin, while Alvarez could make a great deal of money by negotiating a May 2 fight vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., another popular Mexican fighter.

Still, Alvarez vs. Cotto is the marquee matchup possible and that could be why he has turned up the heat on Cotto verbally.

"If he doesn't take this fight, he will pass down in history unlike anybody else if he were to duck a fighter who defeated his brother," Alvarez said.

"Miguel Cotto has to decide whether or not he wants to fight me. I'm not going to wait much longer. I'll let him make his decision. Hopefully, his decision won't hurt his country and all of the fans that want this fight."
