Canelo Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto: Deal 'Maybe' Coming This Week, Alvarez Insists On Cinco De Mayo Weekend [VIDEO]

There is plenty of time between now and May 2, but boxing fans would like to know sooner rather than later whether or not a much-anticipated showdown between Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez and Puerto Rican icon Miguel Cotto will go down this spring.

There have been talks, rumors and delays so far-as well as a looming controversy about what date the fight will happen.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. set boxing ablaze with a call out to Manny Pacquiao, his nemesis whom he's never met in the ring, for a May 2 super fight.

"Floyd Mayweather is not ducking or dodging any opponent. Bob Arum is stopping the fight. We have been trying to make this fight happen behind the scenes for years now but the fans and the people have been fooled because they have been listening to the people on one side. Now it's time for us to talk. We want the fight. Get ready. Let's make it happen, May 2. Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao, let's do it," Mayweather said on Showtime.

Alvarez has no plans to move off Cinco de Mayo weekend though, even if going head-to-head with Mayweather is a bad business move.

"I said I was planning to fight [next] in May and I intend to do so. [May 2] is a very important date for me and I'm not going to move from that date. These Mexican dates are for us. I want to return these dates to us," Alvarez said.

For Alvarez to be competitive against Mayweather and Pacquiao, he will likely need a name as big as Cotto to join him in the ring. There are reportedly some snags in the negotiations that are frustrating Canelo, but Cotto's adviser Gaby Pengaricano gave a slight glimmer of hope over the weekend.

When asked if the fight will be agreed to by Tuesday he responded with "Maybe," which is better than no. If Cotto decides against facing Alvarez, or can't agree to terms, Alvarez and co. will likely chase a bout with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
