Bruins Game Tonight NHL Eastern Conference Playoff Game 3: Police Officer Shot in Gunfight With Boston Marathon Terrorists Will Wave Bruins Banner

A police officer who was nearly killed during a gunfight with the Boston Marathon terrorists will wave a Boston Bruins team banner before tonight's NHL Eastern Conference finals playoff game between the Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Boston Globe is reporting that Transit Police officer Richard "Dic" Donohue, a lifelong Bruins fan, will be in attendance at the game tonight as part of the Bruins' "Boston Strong" theme in selecting honorary Bruins Fan Banner Captains during this year's playoffs.

Among the fans selected have been citizens who were wounded during the Marathon bombings and good Samaritans who gave aid during and after the attacks.

"It has been a long 6 weeks with a lot of ups and downs, and it is finally time for Dic to have some fun and get out of a hospital setting, even if for only 1 night!" Donohue's wife, Kim, wrote on a Facebook page set up after her husband was gravely wounded. "I am so unbelievably proud of my husband and couldn't be happier that he gets to show his true BOSTON pride!"

She also made reference to MIT Police Officer Sean Collier, whom the Globe reported was a close friend of Richard Donohoe and was allegedly shot and killed by the Marathon bombing suspects.

"Sean, the first wave of that flag will be for you," Kim wrote.

According to the Globe, Donohue had nearly no blood and no pulse when he was first hospitalized after a bullet severed an artery in his leg after he was shot in Watertown during a violent gunfight between police and the two alleged Marathon bombers in the early morning hours of April 19.

Donohue reportedly nearly died, but doctors now suggest that he could make a full recovery. He recently was transferred from a hospital to a rehabilitation facility.
