Canelo Alvarez is set to meet today with Golden Boy president Oscar De La Hoya in the wake of cancelled talks with WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto for a May 2 super fight.
James Kirkland is speculated to be the frontrunner for Alvarez's next fight, but De La Hoya said there are a number of paths Alvarez can take.
"We're discussing the different possibilities, whether it's Kirkland, [former welterweight world champion Timothy] Bradley is on the table, and I'm not saying [Miguel] Cotto is off," De La Hoya said. "That's the fight people want to see."
De La Hoya's admission that Miguel Cotto is not off the table is a different tune than he was singing earlier in the week, and likely music to boxing fans' ears.
"The deal is off the table with Cotto," De La Hoya said. "They did not accept. So Canelo decided to move on. We had a deadline. We had our fifth deadline [Friday night], and Canelo has decided, because Cotto and [attorney] Gaby [Penagaricano] turned down the deal, he is obviously not going to be waiting for nobody."
De La Hoya is now saying Cotto is the one who walked away from negotiations, and Alvarez is all ears because his top priority is making great fights for the fans.
"Cotto pulled out. As a fighter who wants to have the best fights for the fans, 'Canelo' is never going to close the door on Cotto," De La Hoya said.
The biggest issue facing Alvarez and De La Hoya is the stalled talks between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, which De La Hoya has said would be enough to push Alvarez off of his coveted May 2 date. De La Hoya couldn't resist taking a potshot at Mayweather over the slow movement, saying he's afraid to lose his zero and face a challenge like Pacquiao.
"I really feel as a fight fan that Mayweather doesn't want to fight Pacquiao, that he doesn't want to lose."
