NASCAR In New York City? 'Big Apple' Racetrack In Plans [VIDEO]

The "Big Apple" could be set to add a NASCAR racetrack to its already bustling city.

According to SI.com's Beyond the Flag, Richard Petty Motorsports co-owner and New York City resident Andrew Murstein is on an active search to a way to establish a new stock-car racetrack in the city that never sleeps.

New York City is the definition of a sports hub, with multiple teams represented in baseball (Yankees, Mets), hockey (Rangers, Islanders), basketball (Knicks, Nets) and football (Giants, Jets) -- though the latter pairing technically plays in New Jersey.

One thing lacking in New York City is motor sports, but Murstein is out to solve that problem.

Per the report, NASCAR feels it's missing out on a golden opportunity to build on their sport by putting a track in New York.

There were plans in place for a Staten Island track, but they were eventually shot down due to political and environmental reasons after the land was purchased for it. The endeavor never made it out of the planning stage.

The planned track would have been 3/4 a mile and would have housed 82,500 fans. After the idea fell through, the 650 acres of land was sold to developers and will now house a factory complex instead.

Murstein is looking to revitalize the plan to bring the sport to New York City, and he even said that NASCAR is up to the idea and it will happen "eventually, but it's not on the top of their priority list right now."

Murstein is hopeful to have a track closer to New York City than Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania. NASCAR won't be in New York City anytime soon, but the idea still has legs.

The 2015 NASCAR season gets underway on Feb. 22 with the Daytona 500.
