Atlanta Falcons Stadium Photos Straight Out of Star Wars Saga? Takes First Step Toward Becoming Fully Functional Death Star

The architecture appears as if it comes straight out of the Star Wars saga.

The Atlanta Falcons unveiled plans for a new football stadium to the Georgia World Congress Center Authority Board of Governors, USA Today reported, and the structure takes on a futuristic look.

Those plans have been approved, clearing the first hurdle for the complex to become reality.

According to the article, Architects from 360 Architecture, the architecture firm working with the team on the designs, clarified that the design is in the planning stages only. The actual construction of the stadium could result in a finished product that could have a completely different appearance.

Still, Atlanta officials are excited at the prospect of building such an unusual facility.

"The conceptual design phase of the new stadium project has been a dynamic, interactive and collaborative process," Falcons president and CEO Rich McKay said on AtlantaFalcons.com. "Our discussions and decisions have focused on creating an iconic asset for the city and state, a great game day experience for our fans and attendees of other events that will be held in the new stadium, and a connection with the surrounding communities.  We look forward to moving into the more detailed design phase with our great partners at 360 Architecture and their recently-selected joint venture partners."

USA Today added that the components of the stadium include:

  • A retractable roof that somehow removes a side of the stadium so that you can see the city skyline.
  • Structure walls that appear to be see-through that are connected by a metal frame.
  • A giant, 360-degree, LED Twitter feed going around the top of the stadium.

On June 14, the Falcons announced that three Atlanta architecture firms were selected to partner with the lead architect, 360 Architecture.  The three firms - Goode Van Slyke Architecture, Stanley Beaman & Sears, and tvsdesign - will contribute to the stadium design in a number of areas and how they can impact downtown Atlanta.

AtlantaFalcons.com added that construction of the new stadium is scheduled to start during the first half of 2014.
