The Minnesota Vikings and free agent linebacker Desmond Bishop have agreed to an undisclosed contract, his agent Blake Baratz told ESPN. Bishop was previously a member of the NFC North rival Green Bay Packers.
The Packers parted ways with Bishop a week before his signing with Minnesota. Bishop made a visit to the Vikings facility the following day. He also met with the Kansas City Chiefs last week before making a final decision over the weekend.
Bishop sat out during the entire 2012 season due to a torn hamstring muscle. However, he will likely start for Minnesota if healty due to the team's lack of depth at middle linebacker.
It is undetermined whether the team will ask Bishop to take over the middle linebacker position or his familiar outside position. Erin Henderson, who previously played at outside linebacker, has been working out at the middle position during spring practices for the Vikings.
The former JUCO All-American finished his collegiate career at California after transferring from City College of San Francisco. He was selected by the Green Bay Packers with the No. 192 pick in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft.
Bishop currently has 292 tackles, 9.0 sacks and one interception for his five active NFL seasons. He was previously signed to a 4 year, $19 million deal before being cut by Green Bay last week.
Bishop suffered his season-ending injury during a preseason game against the San Diego Chargers on April 9, 2012. He was placed on injured reserve on August 27.
