Alex Rodriguez Set To Retire, Collect On Insurance Settlement And Avoid Suspension?

The New York Daily News is reporting Yankees star Alex Rodriguez may be plotting to soon retire as part of a plan to collect on a massive insurance payout and avoid what’s almost certain to be a lengthy suspension doled out by Major League Baseball officials.

According to the Daily News, Rodriguez is pushing to return to rehab games right away at which time he would claim he is physically unable to perform, setting the stage for him to walk away from the game entirely and collect on the $114 million in salary he is still owed.

“It’s all about him getting his money and not losing it to suspension,” a source told the Daily News. “He knows he’s never going to the Hall of Fame. All that’s left for him is to make sure he gets his money--- all of it.”

Rodriguez has spent the last few days embroiled in a public spat with general manager Brian Cashman after he tweeted he had been medically cleared to return to game action, prompting Cashman to respond “when the Yankees want to announce something we will. Alex should just shut the f--- up.”

If and when he’s ever cleared to play, MLB is expected to suspend Rodriguez for what some have speculated could be as many as 100 games as part of a performance-enhancing drug scandal involving former Biogenesis clinic chemist Anthony Bosch.

The Daily News notes that a player who retires because he is physically unable to perform, even if he’s later suspended, would still get the full amount of his contract.
