Sometimes we get by with a little help from our friends. And sometimes something inspiring redefines what it means to be a winner. Asia Ford of Louisville, KY finished the 10K Rodes City Run in last place, but she still has the heart of a champion.
Ford is one of those feel-good stories that seems to good to be true, but we’re sure glad isn’t. She worked her tookus off to lose more than 200 pounds (she once weighed in at 474), and entered this race as a personal challenge to herself.
Even though she was experiencing fatigue and trepidation, Ford was determined to finish this race and not quit. She labored and persevered for miles. And one police officer, Lieutenant Aubrey Gregory, held her hand to help her get across the finish line. The crowd of spectators cheered her on like a champion.
"Your heart starts to fill up, you get those goose bumps and tingles all over your body," Gregory later said, via WHAS 11. "When I watched her approach and I started to hear people scream and I let her go right there before the end and to see her raise her hands, there aren't words to express the way I felt seeing her be successful."
