Los Angeles Dodgers Rumors: Hyun-Jin Ryu Shut Down Due To Shoulder Injury, Will Start Season On DL [VIDEO]

Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu had to shut down his throwing program on Sunday due to soreness in his throwing shoulder and he will be evaluated by the team doctor after experiencing discomfort when having a catch.

MLB 2015 NL East Predictions and Preview

Ryu, a key part in the middle of the Dodgers starting rotation, will start the season on the disabled list.

"I think he's feeling something. If he was feeling nothing, we wouldn't be trying to get him in front of Doc," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said per ESPN. "We know to move forward it's going to be a heavier workload, so we've got to be sure where we're at. I saw the look on Hyun-Jin's face and it wasn't typical Hyun-Jin."

Ryu experienced soreness in the shoulder on March 17 when he started against the Texas Rangers and the Dodgers mulled trade options for starting pitching depth, but ultimately stood pat.

"We've been looking for starting pitching depth all offseason and that's kind of continued into camp," Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi said. "This is just a hard time to go out there and acquire starting pitching depth. We're fielding calls from teams that are asking us about our starting pitching depth, so there aren't a lot of starting pitching sellers right now."

Ryu is Los Angeles' slated third starter behind reigning NL MVP and Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke and has been a key part of the team's success the last two seasons.

Kershaw had an injury scare himself when he was hit in the face with a line drive during a spring training game with the Oakland Athletics on Friday, but stayed in the contest.

Ryu, 27, went 14-7 in 2014 with a 3.38 ERA and is 28-15 with a 3.17 ERA through two seasons in the MLB.

Ryu aided the Dodgers to a 94-68 record in 2014 that saw them clinch the NL West for the second straight season before the team fell to the St. Louis Cardinals in a disappointing four-game performance in the NLDS.

Ryu had a no-decision in the one game he pitched in that series, yielding one run on five hits with four strikeouts and one base on balls.
