One of the most complex things that any NFL team has to deal with involves the contract negotiations that they go through with their best players. Obviously great players want to be paid a ton, and teams often have to find ways to create a contract that appropriately values the player while still fitting nicely into the salary cap.

The Dallas Cowboys currently have Dez Bryant under the franchise tag, but both sides have repeatedly said that they want to work out a long-term deal before the July 15 deadline. It is certainly in Dallas's best interest to do so, as they could potentially free up some cap space to use to fill other holes on the roster. If no deal is reached, a holdout is possible, but the team does not think that is likely, according to ESPN.
"I'm not worried about that at all, and it's because of how much he loves the game, how much he knows that preparation, practice, all of that improves him," said Jerry Jones. "He's at a time in his career where he's physically still very much improving, can get better."

"The biggest reason I want a long-term agreement with Dez is so we'll have a deal with him for a long term -- but not as far as impacting what we're doing this year in terms of what Dez's performance will be or what we are as a team," Jones continued. "We've got that in place with the franchise. So I'm not worried. I know how much he loves to play football, I know how much he loves his teammates, I know how much he loves his team and I know how much money he's getting. With all of that, you play."
Some have speculated that Bryant might hold out into training camp or possibly the regular season in an effort to leverage a deal with the team. He could potentially hold out for up to ten games and still accrue another season toward his free agency. Obviously that represents a drastic step, but players have taken similar actions in the past.
It really benefits both sides for to get a long-term deal, but even if that does not happen, the Cowboys are probably right about Bryant. It is also in his best interest to play because the easiest way for him to force Dallas to open its checkbook is to put up monster numbers across an entire season again in 2015.
