McCoy wasn’t the first high-profile offensive talent to see their time in Philly come to an end under coach Chip Kelly. Wide receiver DeSean Jackson was released the off-season prior, and another wide receiver, Jeremy Maclin, left for Kansas City in free agency.
Speaking to The Philadelphia Inquirer about the trade in retrospect, McCoy didn’t mince words when speaking about coach Kelly and what McCoy perceived to be his outsized ego.
“I don’t think he likes or respects the stars. I’m being honest,” McCoy said. “I think he likes the fact that it’s ‘Chip Kelly and the Eagles.’ It was ‘DeSean Jackson – a high-flying, take-off-the-top-of-the-defense receiver.’ Or ‘the quick, elusive LeSean McCoy.’ I don’t think [Kelly] likes that.
McCoy had 1,319 yards and five touchdowns for the Eagles in 2014, so he definitely still has something left in the tank. Perhaps McCoy will enjoy playing under newly-signed Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan when compared to Kelly.
Whereas Kelly is perceived as a mad genius and total control freak, Rex Ryan is acknowledged to be the definition of a player's coach. He runs a loose locker room and encourages his players to be themselves and treat the game with a degree of fun rather than just rigid professionalism. Stars during his previous tour with the Jets, ranging from Mo Wilkerson to Darrelle Revis, have all raved about him as a man and a leader.
There's something to be said for the fact that Kelly was ready to ship Shady out but Rex and the Bills jumped at the opportunity to take him on. Expect big things from McCoy in Buffalo next season, and a big smile on Rex Ryan's face when it happens.
