Gennady Golovkin Next Fight: Willie Monroe Jr. Trainer Accused Of Dealing Meth

The trainer for Gennady Golovkin's next opponent, Willie Monroe Jr., is in hot water for selling methamphetamine to undercover police officers, according to reports.

BoxingScene.com reports that Tony Morgan is facing charges for "trafficking in meth over 28 grams, maintaining a vehicle for drug trafficking, and possession of paraphernalia." His fighter, Monroe Jr., is scheduled to fight Golovkin, the WBA and IBO middleweight champion of the world, on May 16. Morgan also worked with former welterweight champion Andre Berto until 2013, when he switched to his current trainer Virgil Hunter.

There is no word yet on whether Morgan will be in Monroe Jr.'s corner now for the May 16 bout, nor what affect it will have on his training camp. The shocking news will surely stack the odds even further for Monroe Jr., who was already a major underdog against boxing's premier knockout artist.

Golovkin has knocked out 19 straight opponents, and two of his last three victims were stopped before Round 4.

Monroe Jr., meanwhile, is a 28-year-old southpaw with no defining victory yet on his resume. He will enter the ring with a 19-1-0 record that includes six knockouts. The biggest notch on his belt is a unanimous decision victory in January over Brian Vera, and his only loss occurred in March 2011, a split decision loss to Darnell Boone.
