Arton Senna Death: Rembmer F1's Greatest Driver 21 Years Later

Formula One racing is an intense and exhilirating sport. The cars are little more than giant engines on wheels, and the drivers navigate complex course layouts at breakneck speeds. The drivers are considered the best racers in the world, and the sport has produced a number of racing legends.

However, Formula One also has a reputation as the most dangerous racing circuit in the world, largely because of all of the same things that make it so exciting for fans. It is not uncommon for a driver to be seriously injured in a crash, and drivers have died because of accidents on the track.

One such driver was Ayrton Senna, who is considered by many to be Formula One's greatest driver of all time, according to The Independent. Senna won three F1 championships and had a fierce rivalry with Alain Prost, which was arguably the best rivalry in the history of the sport.

Senna was involved in a wreck at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994. He had debated his future in the sport following some nasty crashes just prior to the race, but he elected to drive anyway.

According to Jack De Menezes:

"On the seventh lap, his car inexplicably left the track at the Tamburello at roughly 191mph, hitting the concrete barrier at 145mph and bringing out the red flag. Despite Watkins' and the medical teams' best attempts, Senna later died in hospital in what turned out to be the darkest weekend F1 has ever seen, though his legacy lives on today. "

If there was a positive that came from Senna's death, it was that it helped spark safety improvements throughout the sport. Obviously it will never be risk free, but new improvements are made every day, and always with an eye on arguably the sport's greatest driver.
