Three former top Penn State University administrators, including the school’s president, have been ordered to stand trial for allegedly covering up child sex abuse perpetrated by now jailed former top football coaching assistant Jerry Sandusky.
According to news reports, District Court Justice William Wenner ruled on Tuesday there was enough evidence for former president Graham Spanier, former vice president Gary Schultz and ex-athletic director Tim Curley to all face trial on charges ranging from obstruction of justice to endangering the welfare of children and conspiracy.
The ruling followed a two-day preliminary hearing during which prosecutors alleged all three men knew about abuse allegations lodged against Sandusky as far back as 1998. In addition, state attorneys claimed each of the men lied about all such knowledge during a 2001 grand jury probe convened to investigate some of the more lingering allegations.
Sandusky, 68, was convicted in June 2012 on 45 counts of child sex abuse, ranging from corruption of minors to involuntary deviate sexual intercourse. A longtime top assistant of legendary Nittany Lions’ coach Joe Paterno, he was sentenced to up to 60 years in prison.
Paterno died in January 2012, just three months after being forced out as coach amid the growing scandal. In all, the Brooklyn, NY native served 45 seasons as coach.
