San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis has a slight fracture of his right hand and team officials are unsure when he might be able to return to action, according to ProFootballTalk.com
Willis suffered the injury during a team practice earlier this week and X-rays have now confirmed the team’s worst fears. News reports indicate the team plans to “proceed with caution” with both Willis’ recovery and eventual return to the field. The team is hopeful that he will heal in enough time to be available for the Sept.8, season opener.
Willis has suffered breaks in the same hand three times over his NFL career. Still, he’s made the Pro Bowl all six of his NFL seasons and Niners are hopeful this year will be no exception. Willis also played part of a collegiate season with a cast on the same hand.
The 49ers were also without linebacker NaVorro Bowman for part of Wednesday’s practice after he suffered a groin strain earlier this week. Earlier in the off season, star wideout Michael Crabtree was lost until at least the latter half of the season when he suffered a torn Achilles.
The 49ers signed Anquan Boldin earlier in the off season with the idea of pairing him opposite of the speedy Crabtree, but now team officials are hoping can assume the top receiver spot at least until Crabtree is able to return to action.
