The New York Knicks have signed free agent guard Beno Udrih to a one-year deal, bringing the number of players they now have under contract to 14, according to Newsday.
The nine-year veteran signed for the league minimum of $1.272 million and is expected to serve as a capable backup to starter Raymond Felton. Over his career with the Spurs, Kings, Bucks and Magic, the 31-year-old has averaged 9.1 points and 3.6 assists.
With Jason Kidd retired and now serving as the head coach for the crosstown rival Brooklyn Nets, Udrih joins Felton and Pablo Prigioni as the team’s only point guards.
Udrih’s best season came in 2010-11, when as a member of the Sacramento Kings, he averaged a career-high 13.7 points and 4.9 assists. With the Magic last season, Udrih netted a career-high 6.1 assists a night to go along with 10.2 points.
Udrih was also being courted by the Memphis Grizzlies, but canceled a scheduled meeting with the team this week after talks with the Knicks reached a boil.
With Coach Mike Woodson expected to start a lineup of Felton, Iman Shumpert, Tyson Chandler, Carmelo Anthony and Metta World Peace, the Knicks' bench now consists of Prigioni, Udrih, J.R. Smith, Kenyon Martin, Andrea Bargnani, Amar'e Stoudemire and rookies Tim Hardaway, Jr., C.J. Leslie and Jeremy Tyler.
