Andre Berto Next Fight: Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s Uncle Defends Matchup With 'Money' [VIDEO]

Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s prospective matchup with Andre Berto has been heavily criticized by fans and media, so his uncle Jeff has come to the defense of the fight.

"You see how they're already making a big deal about him fighting Karim Mayfield or Andre Berto. Andre Berto was a world champion, why can't he fight him? Why can't he fight him but anybody else can?" Jeff Mayweather asked.

"When it comes to Floyd everything changes. The opponent changes, the status of the opponent, everything changes. No one else would drop down to fight anybody else but they would do that for Floyd because of the money they'll make."

Much of the criticism of Berto as an opponent stems from his recent performances. Berto is currently on a two-fight winning streak after winning a 10-round unanimous decision vs. Steve Chambers, and then knocking out Josesito Lopez in a Premier Boxing Champions fight.

Prior to those two wins though, Berto had lost three of four fights, including two defeats to vanquished Mayweather opponents-Victor Ortiz and Robert Guerrero-and a knockout loss to Jesus Soto Karass, who had eight losses when he fought Berto.

While Berto's fighting style is crowd pleasing, he was exposed in his losses as sorely lacking in the defense department, and that was even evident in his win over Josesito Lopez. Meanwhile, Mayweather Jr. is known for not only having the best defense in boxing, but being one of the most accurate counter-punchers in boxing history. Mayweather has said that September 12 will be his final fight; while few believe him, fans would prefer to see him "go out" against a more threatening challenger like Keith "One-Time" Thurman, or even middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin.
