The Philadelphia Phillies may have found a suitor for left-handed ace Cole Hamels, whom they’ve been trying to trade since spring training. The San Francisco Giants are looking to beef up their rotation behind star southpaw Madison Bumgarner, according to Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, and acquiring Hamels makes sense for them on the mound and within their spreadsheets.

Hamels’ stock had taken a hit after back-to-back poor outings, but then he rebounded a few days ago with a no-hitter against the Chicago Cubs. For the season Hamels is 6-7 with a 3.64 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. Hamels FIP is sitting at 3.20, indicating he’s pitched better than his stats are saying.
Hamels has upward of $67 million remaining on his contract for the next three seasons, but that deal is less prohibitive than the contracts for impending free agents David Price and Johnny Cueto will be. The Giants can absorb that contract easily according to Rosenthal, because they have $50 million coming off their books at season’s end.
San Francisco also has a number of big prospects they can deal to Philadelphia, particularly Adalberto Mejia, Kyle Crick and Tyler Beede, a trio of starting pitchers in Double-A. The Phillies have maintained they want two big prospects in return for Hamels, and the New York Yankees reportedly turned down an offer of Hamels for outfield prospect Aaron Judge and pitching prospect Luis Severino.
