Dolphins Football Rumors: Evan Mathis Contract Talks 'Have Not Even Begun'

Make no mistake, the Miami Dolphins are in desperate need of an interior offensive lineman. According to the Palm Beach Post's Andrew Abramson, the Dolphins have identified Evan Mathis as the solution to their inexperienced problems.

"Unless they sign Evan Mathis, you're talking about two relatively inexperienced guards probably playing this year," Abramson told the Big O Show following the first day of training camp. "I think you can possibly overcome that if you have good play from your offensive tackles. But obviously, they're not going to get that unless Branden Albert is fully healthy. That might be the number one thing to watch as training camp goes on."

"What I know about Evan Mathis is, yeah, the Dolphins have interest.," he added. "Why wouldn't they have interest? This is a guy who's one of the better guards in the league."

"I think the thing with Mathis though is he wants to get as much money as possible. And for him, a veteran like him who's 33 years old, he doesn't need to go out and sign with a team today. Now, he needs to sign soon. You want to be there in training camp. You've got to get used to your new team, so I would imagine he signs soon."

Just not as soon as one might think.

According to Armando Salguero, Mathis' agent—the incomparable Drew Rosenhaus—and the Dolphins have not yet begun contract talks.

Mathis was released from the Philadelphia Eagles in June after holding out of OTAs in search of a new deal. The two-time Pro Bowler reportedly has additional interest from the Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs.
