Amir Khan, having officially struck out again in his quest to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr., continues to set his sights high for his next bout. Khan believes he is in position to land a date with Manny Pacquiao when "Pacman" returns to the ring from shoulder surgery.
"If it makes sense financially for both of us, then I think the fight will definitely take place," Khan said.
"It would be massive in the UAE, but there are other few places. Qatar is one that is interested in me fighting over there as well as Dubai and Abu Dhabi. All the major sports are going over there now, so why not take boxing there. Starting off with Amir Khan versus Manny Pacquiao would be massive out there. ... I think it would be one of the biggest fights ever."
Mayweather-Berto Could Be A Tune Up For A Pacquiao Rematch
Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) has been passed over multiple times by Mayweather in favor of Marcos Maidana, and now Andre Berto. Making a fight with Pacquiao might be difficult for a number of reasons. First, Pacquiao is promoted by Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, who is currently suing boxing adviser Al Haymon, the founder of Premier Boxing Champions. Khan's last fight was a PBC on Spike card vs. Chris Algieri.
Second, Pacquiao may require a tune up fight. After undergoing surgery Pacquiao was expected to be out of the ring for nine months to a year. Pacquiao, now 36 years old, is no longer in his prime and may not want to fight an elite welterweight right out of the gate.
Amir Khan Might Have Talked His Way Out Of A Mayweather Fight
If Pacquiao doesn't work out, Khan said he'd be willing to do a high-profile rematch with Danny "Swift" Garcia, who knocked him out in 2012 when they were fighting as junior welterweights.
"I'd like to fight Danny Garcia again. If that option came up, I'd grab it with both hands. That's a fight I'd like to take," Khan told Dubai Eye.
