The Yankees are heating up in the dog days of August, winning seven of their last ten games and making a push for a wildcard spot thanks to a re-loaded offense that is featuring Alfonso Soriano and Alex Rodriguez flanking superstar second baseman Robinson Cano.
In 12 games this season Rodriguez has had a major impact on the Yankees' batting order, hitting .319, with two home runs, six RBI, and a .407 on-base percentage. Soriano has been even better than Rodriguez, taking a flamethrower to the Los Angeles Angels and Red Sox over a six-game stretch in which he was 15-for 28, blasted five home runs, and notched 18 RBI.
New York will try to bottle up the emotion that carried them to a dramatic 9-6 win over the Red Sox on Sunday, when Rodriguez was plunked by BoSox starter Ryan Dempster.
"Whether you like me or hate me, what's wrong is wrong. That was unprofessional and silly," A-Rod said after the game. "Today kind of brought us together." Center fielder Brett Gardner, who socked the go-ahead triple said, "I'm not sure how I would feel if I was on a different team, but Alex is my teammate and obviously I'm glad to have him back in the room. We know that we're at a point in the season where we've got to play every game like it's our last."
In the first game of today's twin-bill Ivan Nova (6-4, 2.99 ERA) goes up against Esmil Rogers (3-7, 4.91 ERA). In Game 2, at 7:05 p.m., the Yankees will toss Phil Hughes (4-12, 4.97 ERA) on the mound against Mark Buehrle (9-7, 4.29 ERA).
