Tony Stewart may not have a fifth surgery on the injured right leg that he crushed in a dirt-track race two years ago.

NASCAR.com is reporting that the 44-year-old Stewart, who severely fractured his lower right leg in a sprint-car race at Southern Iowa Speedway in August, 2013, revealed that doctors are revisiting whether to remove a titanium rod that is still in his leg to stabilizethe limb.
"We actually don't know yet. There's potential that we may not have to have the operation, after all," Stewart said Tuesday at the announcement of Danica Patrick's new contract and sponsorship deal at Stewart-Haas Racing. "The rod that's in there might stay in there, so at the end of October we're having a meeting with the doctor and we're going to make that decision. Either way, it's either one-and-done or we're done."

The report did not indicate why the surgery might not be required.
Former NASCAR driver Rusty Wallace said last month he believed Stewart's right leg was the primary cause for his struggles in returning to the circuit. Stewart has not won a NASCAR Sprint Cup series race since June of 2013.
"I really think that Tony's leg injury really screwed up his dancing inside the car (to work pedals), the way he works his momentum inside the car as a driver. I see Tony spinning out right now and doing some things that Tony never did," Wallace told nascartalk.nbcsports.com.
Stewart currently is 26th in the points standings for the Sprint Cup Series driver standings after his 21st-place showing at the Pure Michigan 400 last weekend.
