Sting WWE Rumors: Backstage News On Plans That Led To 'Vigilante's' Return [VIDEO]

The WWE pulled off a major shock this week on Monday Night RAW as Sting returned and Triple H later revealed he will battle Seth Rollins for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Night of Champions.

While there was initial belief that Sting's match with Rollins was always in the cards, the plans for the bout to take place actually only came up about a week ago and were finalized just days before SummerSlam this past Sunday, according to PWInsider.

With the WWE broadcasting from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the third straight night, Sting gave the WWE Universe one last shock by hiding behind a curtain in the ring on a platform that was supposed to hold a Rollins statue.

"The Vigilante" emerged to the storyline shock of Triple H, Stephanie McMahon and "The Architect" and began attacking the reigning WWE World Heavyweight and U.S. Champion. An irate Triple H then made the match official for Night of Champions on Sept. 20 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Tex., which will mark Sting's second match in WWE history.

5 Potential Outcomes For Sting Vs. Seth Rollins At Night of Champions

Regarding his entrance on Monday, the WWE started the covered platform out backstage with Sting inside of it and he was in there the whole time, according to PWInsider. Crew members then brought the box, with Sting inside, out on a forklift and after moving some of the arena lighting gear out of the way to make room, planted the platform into the ring with Sting hiding behind the curtain.

The former WCW and TNA icon made his first-ever in-ring appearance at WrestleMania 31 last March at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. in a match against Triple H.

"The Game" used his sledgehammer to defeat "The Vigilante" in a bout that saw outside interference from former nWo members Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall and Kevin Nash and former D-Generation X affiliates Shawn Michaels, X-Pac and The New Age Outlaws.

There was speculation that Sting may never return to action, but rumors began to swirl that he'd take part in SummerSlam, though it never came to fruition.

The WWE opted to save Sting's appearance for RAW and now the six-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion could potentially win the richest prize in the WWE at Night of Champions.
