Will Mariano Rivera go off to never-never land with the band that introduced him night after night when he entered baseball games?

The New York Daily News is reporting that speculation is arising about a possible live appearance by the band, Metallica, during a celebration of Rivera's career as New York Yankees closer.

Rivera's entrance music at Yankee Stadium is Metallica's "Enter Sandman." It has become synonymous with his baseball career.

The band is scheduled to play at Harlem's Apollo Theater on Sept. 21 to promote a 3-D concert film. The Yankees will honor Rivera's career at a pregame ceremony the following night, according to NESN.com.

The Sept. 21 date marks the end of the Metallica Tour, and Yankees management is not giving any details of what will happen at the during Rivera's celebration, according to the New York Daily News.

The Daily News Went so far as to report that it asked a Yankees spokesman whether Metallica was scheduled to play but did not receive an answer, other than the spokesman could not comment on "any events surrounding Mo's ceremony."

According to NESN.com, Yankee Stadium is just four blocks and three stops on the 6 train away from the Apollo - probably about a 20-minute commute total.

Noisecreep.com also pointed out that the Yankees' opponent that night will be the San Francisco Giants - San Francisco is the hometown team of the Bay Area-based Metallica. The report also said that Rivera received a Metallica gold record from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland as part of the Indians' farewell celebration of the retiring pitcher earlier in the year.
