RGIII's mission is set to be completed on Thursday.
USA TODAY Sports is reporting that Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III could be cleared to play Thursday in his team's final preseason exhibition game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
According to the report, Dr. James Andrews, who performed offseason surgery on Griffin's right knee, will give him the green light to play as long as he doesn't have any setbacks.
If Griffin is able to start in the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 9, he'll have made it back from reconstructive knee surgery in just eight months.
"If there are no setbacks, (Andrews) will OK him,'' Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. "But I can't say that for sure. Dr. Andrews will make that call. (Griffin has) had a good week of preparation in a lot of (first) team situations - offense vs. defense. He got a lot of reps this week - a majority of the reps. And there were no setbacks with his knee. So that's a good sign.
"So, hopefully, next week he can get similar reps and be ready for the Monday night game."
Up until Saturday night, Griffin's offseason knee surgery has been one of controversy. As recently as two weeks ago, Griffin had commented that he didn't understand why Shanahan and the Redskins staff were approaching his rehab so conservatively and not allowing him to play in the preseason.
The next day, Griffin again appeared before the media in an attempt to downplay any bad blood between him and his coach. Shanahan even joked with Griffin during the Redskins previous preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Aug. 19.
According to USA TODAY Sports, the NFL fined Griffin $10,000 for wearing an unauthorized T-shirt with Shanahan's summer mantra, "Operation Patience," during Monday night warm-ups.
