Bruno Mars has been asked to play at halftime of Super Bowl 50, Entertainment Weekly is reporting, citing sources with knowledge of the situation.

Mars played at the halftime of Super Bowl XLVIII, and with the help of a cameo from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, had the most-watched halftime show in Super Bowl history.

And that was before his latest hit, "Uptown Funk" -- a collaboration with Mark Ronson -- became arguably the biggest hit of 2015.

The Seahawks defeated the Broncos, 43-8, in Super Bowl XLVIII, one of the more lopsided contests of the NFL's biggest game in recent years.

Last year, pop artist Katy Perry had a mechanical lion and what appeared to be a dazed dancing shark on stage for Super Bowl XLIX.

But that halftime show gave way to one of the most exciting finishes in Super Bowl history as the Patriots made a last-minute goal-line stand, thanks to Malcolm Butler's goal-line interception of a Russell Wilson pass to lift New England to a 28-24 victory over the Seahawks.

Representatives for Mars and the NFL have not confirmed, nor commented, on the report, Entertainment Weekly added.

This year's big game is scheduled to take place on Feb. 7, 2016, and festivities for the event are expected to be more grandiose than usual because of the golden anniversary of the Super Bowl.
