Take nothing away from Yoenis Cespedes. His arrival in New York didn’t just coincide with the Mets’ surge in the NL East standings, it propelled it. A free agent after this season, Cespedes has made it abundantly clear he’s seeking a long-term deal.
"My only hope is to stay healthy," Cespedes told ESPN, per MLB.com. "I'm not thinking about a contract, but I do know that I will be looking for a contract that is six years or more, has to be six years or more.

His six-year deal, however, should not come from the Mets. His greatness in 2015 just hasn’t translated at Citi Field.

The numbers are overwhelming in his favor -- batting .296 with 17 HRs and 44 RBI -- but a majority of that production has come on the road. In 27 games outside of Flushing, Queens, Cespedes is batting a scorching .352 with 12 HRs and 37 RBI.
Compare that to his record at home -- a pedestrian .220 batting average with five HRs and just seven RBI.
Clearly, Cespedes would have time to assimilate himself with confines of Citi Field, but he wouldn’t have much. He turns 30 this October and the debate will ensue whether he deserves a long-term deal.
It’s one thing to pony up $22 million a year for four years of production, but it’s nothing more than a wasteful deal on the backend of the contract.
The Mets need to give Cespedes a 6 year front loaded contract. Otherwise kiss all of our pitchers goodbye in 2018.
