Ray Rice Update: Murder Trial Suspect Refers To Elevator Video In Her Defense [VIDEO]

A murder trial going on in California may have demonstrated why NFL teams are too reluctant to give Ray Rice a second chance.

A woman from Carlsbad, Calif., who shot and killed her husband and now is being retried for murder, made reference to the disgraced Ravens running back during her testimony on Thursday, according to Fox 5 San Diego.

Julie Harper has told the jury she shot husband Jason in self-defense, testifying that he raped her at least 30 times.

When the trial prosecutor asked Julie Harper whether she had proof of her rape claims, she became defensive and spoke about Janay Rice, Ray's wife whom he knocked out in February, 2014.

"Who was it, the poor wife of Ray Rice last year? I mean she was only fortunate that there was elevator video," Harper said. "If there hadn't been the elevator (video), nobody would believe it. This is exactly why women don't come forward and talk about rape."

The video led to Rice's NFL banishment.

It was Janay, however, who pleaded the NFL for leniency months before TMZ Sports released the video from an Atlantic City casino elevator that showed Rice punching and knocking out his then-fiancée.

Janay's testimony factored into the NFL's original decision to suspend Rice for only two games. When the video came out, however, the NFL suspended Rice indefinitely and the Ravens released him. A judge ruled in November that the NFL could not suspend him indefinitely after originally punishing him for two games, and the NFL had to reinstate him.

But no team has given Rice the opportunity to play again. The video is the primary reason, and continual references to the video and the incident likely will keep teams away.
