Survivor pools are fun, and they seem easy, but it’s actually very hard to last longer than a few weeks. For those who have never done a survivor pool, the rules are simple. Each week you pick one team to win outright—usually, survivor pools do not use spreads. Once you’ve picked that team, they’re unavailable to you for the rest of the season.

The Sure Thing: CHIEFS over Bears
The Chiefs are 1-3, and just got shellacked by the Bengals. Obviously, it’s hard to pull the trigger on a team like that in a survivor pool, especially when guys like me tell you to play it safe. The thing is, this is safe. Kansas City has played one of the toughest schedules in the NFL through four games; after beating Houston at home, they’ve lost to three consecutive undefeated teams.
They are notoriously tough to beat at home, and this week they have the one-win Bears, coming off a hard-earned home win vs. the Raiders. That will quell some of Chicago’s sense of urgency, and give the Chiefs some value. Then, just based off the numbers, the Chiefs are a bad matchup for the Bears. Chicago can’t stop No. 1 wide receivers, and Jeremy Maclin is red hot. Chicago can’t stop the run, and Jamaal Charles is arguably the NFL’s top running back. This is a lock.

The Next Best Thing: Patriots over COWBOYS
If you haven’t used the Pats yet in survivor pools and you’re still alive, congrats! Use them this week. Yeah the Pats are on the road, but Bill Belichick does not lose coming off bye weeks, and the Cowboys are so vulnerable. Brandon Weeden is in for a long day against Belichick’s defense, and the Cowboys’ own defense has been porous. Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman, and even Dion Lewis shouldn’t have much trouble carving these boys up.
If You Want To Get Cute: RAVENS over Browns
The Ravens burned me for my only loss this season, but they should be able to get their second win this week. The Browns have been frisky, but with QBs like Josh McCown and Johnny Manziel, finishing out games will always be tough. Baltimore is laying 6.5 points, which isn’t great for betting against the spread, but just picking the game outright it’s tough to imagine Cleveland winning.
They’re one of the five worst rushing defenses in the league, and Baltimore’s running game got on track against the Steelers last Thursday. Also, the Ravens played last Thursday, giving them extra time to rest and prepare for this divisional matchup, which they won’t be taking lightly because of their 1-3 record.
