The Lions have been a major disappointment in 2015, and at 1-5 they've changed offensive coordinators. Ex-player and current analyst Bart Scott thinks they should go a step further, and blow up the team's core. That begins with moving longtime wide receiver Calvin Johnson.
"I think it's time for the Lions to part ways with [Calvin Johnson]," Scott said. "You're not going to win a championship with him. He's just going to get older and retire and you're not going to get anything with him. He's eating up a huge chunk of the salary cap. It's time to blow this thing up.

"Right now you can trade Megatron and get a first-round draft pick and you get cap space. I think that's the smart move right there."
Scott might be on to something there, especially if that team that takes on Johnson's salary is the Patriots. New England is notorious for trading out of their top picks - which tend to be near the end of Round 1 - and stockpiling later choices. In this case there'd be no stockpiling; instead they'd have another legitimate deep threat, their best since Randy Moss in 2007.
It's worth noting that New England's offense is doing just fight without that coveted deep threat. Dion Lewis has become the best pass-catching back in the NFL, and Rob Gronkowski is arguably the league's most unstoppable player. For all his supposed limitations, Julian Edelman does okay as well, if u consider 52 catches, 584 yards and six touchdowns productive.

Johnson is under contract until 2020, and he's slowed down considerably. Johnson has only surpassed 100 yards receiving once this season, but he has scored in back-to-back games. Part of his struggles may relate to Detroit's slumping offense on the whole, and their utter lack of a running game.
ESPN speculated that the Patriots, if they're willing to spend big, could get the job done for a second-round pick. ESPN's Greg Garber put it out into the universe, and even linked it to New England's acquisition of Moss, who was similarly "slowing down" as a member of the Raiders.
