Once upon a time, Tiger Woods was a more favorable character. Or at least a character.
That's the essence upcoming NBC Sports and Golf Channel personality David Feherty says he wants to capture if he ever gets the chance to do a sit-down interview with the former No. 1 golfer in the world, according to Golf.com.

"There are a number who are on my bucket list, some of whom haven't been able to come on because of scheduling, like Freddy [Couples], Ernie Els, Phil (Mickelson), Tiger," said Feherty. "But really, I'd say Tiger. I want to show the side of Tiger that I know, the side the media doesn't show. Part of the reason he hasn't been on is that he's not ready -- he gets defensive, because we in the media have given him such a hard time."
Woods always has been labeled as a standoffish interview subject that responds with vague, superficial or canned answers. During his dominant years, he was accused of being robotic.

More recently during his struggles, Woods is a bit more sympathetic, but also pitied as a has-been for using the same responses to his struggling game.
But Tiger apparently is much more affable and loose to those close to him.
"He had that smile and that kind of evil sense of humor, the willingness to have fun that we wore out of him over the years," said Feherty. "I want to show that side. My favorite guests are the ones whose different sides are seen on my show."
An interview that Woods conducted when he was 14 has made the rounds since USA Today Sports' For the Win posted it in a recent article. That sense of humor never quite appeared, but he did show some personality.
Even then, Woods seemed a little distant and untrusting of the media, but he also was a bit more open, telling the interviewer that he felt prejudice often when he went to different country clubs to play and that he felt he could be as much of an athletic personality as Michael Jordan.
The disconnect may never be repaired, despite the current state of Woods' game and the fact that injuries have forced him out of the game yet again.
Woods' dominance from 1997-2008 always will set him apart and keep him from being considered an "ordinary" person.
