Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak said it was a "real tough decision" to stick with struggling signal caller Matt Schaub for the team's game at home against St. Louis (2-3) on Sunday, and has admitted that Schaub's job status is anything but certain. Kubiak said if the interceptions continue to pile up, the coach won't hesitate to pull Schaub out of the game in favor of T.J. Yates.
According to NFL.com, a source familiar with the Texans said Schaub's "immediate job status is in doubt." Kubiak's decision to stick with Schaub under center for Sunday's clash with St. Louis wasn't an easy one, and the coach didn't hide it in his press conference earlier this week.
"It was a tough decision," Kubiak said during the news conference per NFL.com. "Real tough. But I feel like it was the best thing for our football team this weekend."
Schaub has had a nightmarish start to the season for the Texans (2-3), going 135-for-212 (63.7 percent) for 1,366 yards with more interceptions (9) than touchdowns (8). Schaub has had a string of a record four games in a row where he's thrown an interception that was returned for a touchdown.
NFL.com reports that Houston brass believes that it would be "simply not fair to the rest of the team" if Schaub continues to struggle and is still left out there for a franchise in danger of slipping further below .500.
The Texans have also had trouble with the offensive line as Schaub has been sacked 12 times thus far. Schaub has appeared to have lost confidence in his arm as his success rate on the field has plummeted. The Texans have invested $30 million in Schaub over the past two seasons.
Houston has made the playoffs for two consecutive seasons after reaching postseason action for the first time in 2011 with a 10-6 record and then finishing a franchise-best 12-4 in 2012 to earn back-to-back AFC South division titles. The Texans have fizzled out in the divisional round of the playoffs each of the last two years, first to Baltimore in 2011 and then to New England in 2012.
If Schaub's problems continue Sunday, he might need to make way for Yates Yates was drafted in the fifth round (152nd overall) in the 2009 NFL Draft and has gone 89-for-149 (59.7%) for 1,002 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions through 12 career games.
Schaub allegedly had a fan come to his house to berate him for his poor play, but downplayed the incident publicly.
If the reports are true, first a fan came for his home, but now it could be Yates coming for his job.
