New York Knicks News: Carmelo Anthony, Other Top Athletes Enter Powerball Despite Not Needing The Money [POLL, PHOTO & VIDEO]

Carmelo Anthony and Alex Ovechkin are already millionaires, but the superstar athletes couldn't help but try to make $1.5 billion more -- by entering the Powerball jackpot.

Anthony, 31, currently makes a base salary of more than $24 million in a contract that pays him $124.1 million over five years.

Alex Ovechkin's Wife Is Smokin' Hot

Ovechkin, 30, meanwhile, is in the eighth year of a 13-year, $124 million pact, where he makes about $10 million annually. To say the sports stars don't need the money would be a massive understatement.

Yet, the two athletes see dollar signs and can't help but give themselves a chance to score another huge payday. Shortly after becoming the first Russian-born player to score 500 goals, photos of Ovechkin buying tickets to the Powerball jackpot on Sunday in Virginia were posted online.

"It was funny," the Capitals captain said via ESPN, adding he planned to buy one or two tickets. "Who's going to take a picture of me? It's crazy. People are crazy."

People probably think the rich Russian superstar is the crazy one for thinking he needs more money.

Ovechkin also said there's "no chance" he will win Wednesday's drawing, but also assured the media that if he did he would "let you guys know." As for Anthony, he at least said he planned to "share it all" if he won.

"I don't think I'm going to ever get hit by an asteroid, I don't think I'm ever going to be president," the Knicks star told ESPN. "I might have a better chance to win Powerball."

The odds of actually winning the jackpot are one in 292.2 million, according to Wired.com, and the lump sum payout is $930 million.

Ovechkin and Anthony already live charmed lives, but they may have another dream come true on Wednesday.

Is it wrong for already rich athletes to play Powerball?
