Things turned ugly during the Flames game against the Predators on Wednesday when Calgary defenseman Dennis Wideman cross-checked a linesman from behind.
With just over eight minutes left in the second period, Wideman was rattled hard into the boards, hitting his head on the glass. Upon getting up, the defenseman headed toward the bench, but linesman Don Henderson was standing on the ice, facing the bench with his back toward Wideman.

Wideman was clearly frustrated, slamming his stick on the ice, and rather than skate around the linesman, he decked him from behind with a cross-check and sent him flailing. It appeared as though the veteran blue-liner knew what he was doing, but after the game he said he was rattled from the hit and accidentally hit Henderson.
Though it's hard to believe the hit wasn't intentional, Wideman noted that he apologized to the official and claimed after the game that he was dazed when it happened. It's possible the defenseman was telling the truth, but it's hard to be certain.

Wideman, who has two goals and 19 points this season for the Flames (21-24-3, 45 points), will likely receive some very harsh discipline from the league for his actions if they deem the hit was intentional. No penalty was called on the play, but he also remained in the game rather than going through concussion protocol after being dazed.
The Predators defeated the Flames, 2-1, but Nashville's win was overshadowed by the heinous act committed by Calgary's alternate captain. Whether or not it was intentional is up for debate, but you can tell us what you think in our poll below.
