Conor McGregor Next Fight: Jose Aldo, Frankie Edgar Both Grinding Featherweight Division To A Halt [VIDEO]

Conor McGregor’s ambition may ruin the UFC featherweight division. McGregor is scheduled to challenge lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos in March in a bid to simultaneously hold two titles, becoming the first fighter in UFC history to do that.

The problem is while he’s off chasing history, the top dogs at featherweight want their shot at him, and won’t risk their standing in other bouts. Jose Aldo, an MMA legend who hadn’t lost in more than a decade before falling to McGregor in seconds, took to Instagram to make his case for a rematch.

While Aldo has a point, he did lose in 13 seconds to McGregor, and get knockout out cold. Frankie Edgar, who has won his last five fights in a row, is also saying he’s tired of waiting his turn.

That’s a big problem. The next highest-rated featherweight is Chad Mendes, who is 1-3 in his last four fights. Here are the losses, starting with the most recent: Edgar, McGregor, Aldo. The only win in there was against Ricardo Lamas, the fifth-ranked featherweight. The most interesting fights at that weight need to involve Aldo and Edgar, but both, justifiably, want McGregor.

Expect UFC president Dana White to go with Aldo first. At 29, Aldo still has plenty left in the tank, and he lost so suddenly that it can be spun as a fluke. While Edgar’s recent run is impressive, he does have a loss vs. Aldo, and endured a three-fight skid from 2012 to 2013. And if McGregor has any say, Edgar will be inactive for a while if he sticks to his guns.

“Frankie has a little bit of desperation about him or something,” McGregor said. “He went 0-2 at lightweight, got the chance to fight for the featherweight title and got the head slapped off him. Now he’s running around begging. It has a stink of desperation off of it, so I’m just going to let him sit for a while.”
