Serena Williams would have made history with a win, allowing her to tie Steffi Graf and draw close to Margaret Court. The only problem is that Angelique Kerber had other things in mind.
The German netter pulled off a major upset by stunning the world’s No. 1 at the 2016 Australian Open, 6-4, 3-6 and 6-4.

Kerber thus copped her first Grand Slam title, making her the first German to win a major singles title since Graf did the trick back during the 1999 French Open.
The result was heartbreaking for Williams, who would have tied Graff’s record of 22 Grand Slam titles.

Kerber had won just once against Williams in six previous meetings, but she had some help from the world's No. 1 in this one.
With Williams committing 23 mistakes in the first set, Kerber used it to her advantage and needed only 39 minutes to finish off the favorite.
Despite the disappointment, Williams was gracious in defeat.
"Angie, congratulations," said Williams via BBC. "You deserve this and I'm so happy for you. I really hope you enjoy this moment."
