In the first of five games between these new Pacific Division rivals, both teams are heading in opposite direction as Los Angeles has won five of its last six games as it continues a four game homestand just three points behind the San Jose Sharks for the division lead while the Flames have lost two in a row and are seven points behind the Sharks and just three ahead of the last place Edmonton Oilers.
The Kings are coming off of a game in which they scored their most goals so far this season in a 5-2 victory over the Dallas Stars on Saturday where Justin Williams led the charge with two first period goals but failed to register his second career hat trick.
"What we need to do is create an identity again on ice. You need to do it every year," Williams told NHL.com. "Whether it's a tie game going into the third [or] you're down a goal, you need to feel like you're going to win, and tonight I felt in this dressing room at the end of the second period that we were confident we were going to win."
Anze Kopitar has a team-high eight points for the Kings--all on assists while Jeff Carter and Williams have each paced the team with four goals with Carter adding two assists for six points and Williams netting one helper for five.
The Flames, meanwhile, are hoping to avoid falling for a third-straight game. The Flames started out promisingly, notching points in five-straight games before falling 3-2 to the Anaheim Ducks and getting thrashed 6-3 Saturday by the Sharks after allowing three power play goals.
"This is by far the best team we've played, but at the same time this is by far our worst game. We made some bad decisions ... that cost us some goals. We made some bad decisions when we went to the box for a few unnecessary reasons," coach Bob Hartley said following the loss to the Sharks via NHL.com.
Jiri Hudler has led the Flames with nine points off of four goals and five assists and has a point in all seven games this season while Sean Monahan has a team-high five goals and three assists for eight points and Mark Giordano has two tallies and ties Hudler with a team-high five helpers for seven points thus far.
In between the pipes, Calgary's No.1 goalie Joey MacDonald has posted a 3-1-1 record with a 2.99 GAA and a .891 save percentage while Jonathan Quick has helped Los Angeles with a 5-3-0 record and a 2.50 GAA with a .913 save percentage.
Los Angeles will look to keep its success going and hopes that its scoring outburst in its last game will carry over while Calgary hopes to avoid stretching its current losing streak to three games when the puck drops at the Staples Center in Los Angeles tonight.
