The Undertaker's rumored WrestleMania 32 opponents have run the gamut, but the most recent Superstar to reportedly step up shouldn't be glossed over.
Kevin Owens made a pitch to face the "Demon from Death Valley" at WrestleMania 32 on April 3 in Texas, but the idea was shot down, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (via WrestlingInc).
"The Deadman" was originally slated to battle John Cena, but his shoulder injury caused the WWE to scramble to find another opponent for him. Braun Strowman was the latest rumored name, but fan backlash may have nixed that plan.
Sting is always a popular and logical choice, especially since both men reside in Texas, but it's uncertain how his neck is holding up after he injured it against Seth Rollins in September. Owens is an unexpected and compelling choice to face The Undertaker at the "Show of Shows," but for whatever reason, the WWE snuffed it out.
Though The Streak is no longer a part of the equation, hearing Owens trash talk the legend on the microphone would make the buildup to the feud intense. The Undertaker would then bring his usual theatrics into the proceedings setting the stage for an interesting clash at the WWE's biggest spectacle.
With so many injuries, the WWE might as well try to continue to build up new stars, but it seems turning down Owens' request is the latest in a series of missteps heading into the biggest show of the year.
Not only is the table set for a bland Roman Reigns vs. Triple H main event, but the fact that the WWE was even thinking of putting Strowman against 'Taker shows how lost things are.
Owens exploded on the scene last year, facing Cena in a tremendous feud and then having a nice run with the Intercontinental Championship. Since then, he's been lost in the midcard shuffle, but a feud with The Undertaker could be just what he needs at this stage of his career.
It's Owens' first WrestleMania, so a loss to "The Deadman" won't harm him if he puts up a good fight. A win, meanwhile, could push him further toward the main event scene.
Unfortunately, it seems like the WWE Universe will never know what such a high-profile feud would do for the former Indy darling because the WWE has yet again snuffed out a great idea before it could even grow legs.
