Washington safety Brandon Meriweather has appealed his two-game ban for illegal hits against the Chicago Bears in Sunday's 45-41 Redskins win.
According to ESPN, league officials plan to hear Meriweather's appeal on an expedited basis and could have a response in as soon as 48 hours, giving the Redskins plenty of time to know his definitive status prior to Sunday's game against Denver.
Meriweather was suspended on Monday after being flagged twice against the Bears for personal fouls, including a helmet-to-helmet hit on wide receiver Alshon Jeffery. Not long after, he launched into Brandon Marshall after a dropped pass near the end zone, prompting Marshall to tell ESPN he feels Meriweather should be banned from the league.
"I'm not venting or anything," Marshall said. "I understand big hits. That's part of our game, but when you have a guy that does it week in and week out, that's when it becomes a problem."
It's not the first time the NFL has punished Meriweather. The seven-year vet was fined $42,000 for two hits in a Week 2 loss at Green Bay. And he was fined $50,000 for a hit in 2010 with New England and accrued $45,000 in fines a year later with Chicago.
