Colin Kaepernick has tried to force his way out of San Francisco, but he may end up staying there if the team can't find a trade partner.
The quarterback made his desires to leave the 49ers known after a forgettable campaign in 2015. Kaepernick had a down year and was eventually replaced as the starter by Blaine Gabbert before undergoing multiple surgeries to end his season.
If Kaepernick ends up staying in San Francisco, it's likely he'll resume the starting role under new head coach Chip Kelly. Former Rams and Cowboys defensive end Michael Sam, who has found difficulty landing another job in the NFL, believes Gabbert should start over Kaepernick next season.
"I think Blaine Gabbert should be [starting for] the 49ers," Sam told TMZ. "Starting quarterback for the 49ers."
When asked if he'd still choose Gabbert, his former Missouri teammate, if Kaepernick stayed, there was no hesitation from Sam.
"Rather than Kaepernick? Yes," he said.
Kaepernick, 28, had surgeries on his left shoulder, right thumb and left knee last season and is coming off of a campaign where he completed 59 percent of his passes while throwing for 1,615 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions. He has been unhappy with his status in San Francisco and has made it publicly known he wants out.
First, the embattled quarterback said he was hoping to land with the Jets, likely because the Giants already have a franchise quarterback in Eli Manning, while Gang Green is still trying to work out a new contract with Ryan Fitzpatrick, 33.
Kaepernick is also dating television and radio personality Nessa Diab, who is based out of New York, providing extra motivation for the former NFC champion to switch coasts.
Though he made his fondness for the Big Apple known, Kaepernick also said he wouldn't mind going to the Browns because of his admiration for Cleveland's new head coach Hue Jackson. The Browns cut ties with troubled quarterback Johnny Manziel earlier this month.
The Super Bowl champion Broncos, like the Jets and Browns, were said to be interested in Kaepernick as well, but they recently added Mark Sanchez to make up for losing Peyton Manning (retirement) and Brock Osweiler (to the Texans in free agency).
The odds are Kaepernick will be stuck in San Francisco, but even if he can't escape, Sam doesn't want to see him starting under center in 2016.
