Jerry Jones has made no secret of the fact that he's enamored with Johnny Manziel, but that doesn't mean he's in any rush to bring the embattled quarterback to the Cowboys.
The Dallas-based franchise's owner has always had kind words to say about Johnny Football's talent, though even he is wary of signing the troubled signal caller.
The Browns cut ties with the former Heisman Trophy winner on Mar. 11, following several drinking binges and an alleged domestic incident with his ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley, which is set to be heard before a grand jury.
Jones recently was approached about Manziel's future and rather than endorse him as usual, the Cowboys owner and general manager acknowledged the former Browns quarterback needed some help first.
"What's got to get out of my mind is my concern for him, just his well-being," Jones told Peter King of Sports Illustrated in a recent interview. "Anybody should be rooting for and concerned about him getting his life together."
Jones couldn't quite go without sending some kind words the quarterback's way, once again talking about how talented he is, but making sure to do so after commenting on how Manziel needs to figure things out in his personal life.
"I have the same impression that when he came out of A&M of what his potential is as a football player," Jones said. "I haven't changed my opinion of how exciting of a player that he is, how unique a player that he is."
Manziel checked himself into rehab prior to last season, but has had plenty of difficulty staying away from the party scene even during the Browns' forgettable season. He's also had more than one alleged physical incident with Crowley, with the last one on Jan. 29 leading to Crowley claiming Manziel hit her so hard she lost hearing in her left ear.
Despite all of his struggles, Jones believes that if Manziel can get it together, he can get the job done ... even if it's too risky to go after him right now.
"We have an old adage in talent evaluation, if you see them do it a couple of times, they can do it," Jones said. "Now, will they have the discipline and the will to go out there and do it day in and day out? Do like a Peyton Manning and make a career out of doing it every day? That hasn't been shown."
