In her defense, Maria Sharapova does not know how long she will be suspended for her failed drug test. But the Russian tennis star isn't exactly secluding herself in shame.
The New York Post's Page Six was the first to post photos of Sharapova on vacation with friend Chelsea Handler in Mexico wowing onlookers with a two-piece bikini.
"The Russian sportswoman was clearly determined to shirk her sorrows, after she failed a drug test earlier this month and admitted to taking a banned substance," The Daily Mail reported. "
Looking as though her woes were a million miles away, Maria larked around on the shores while showing off her incredible athletic physique in her tiny two-piece."
Right Conditions Could Reduce Maria Sharapova Suspension To Months
The five-time Grand Slam winner also was photographed in a dark green two-piece, according to The Daily Mirror. She isn't exactly shying away from paparazzi.
Sharapova has ignited a firestorm within the tennis community with her announcement earlier this month that she tested positive for meldonium, a drug she said she has been taking on and off for 10 years but was put on the banned list this year.
She began a provisional suspension on March 12, and reports have circulated that she could face up to a four-year suspension from the game.
But her admission and cooperation with ITF officials may help her reduce that suspension time. She has posted a video and photo of her working on her game on her Instagram account.
Sharapova hasn't played since the Australian Open, where she lost in the quarterfinals to Serena Williams. She suffered a forearm injury that kept her out of competition until she learned of her failed test.
Last year at this time, Sharapova was competing at the Miami Open, although she suffered a shocking second-round upset at the hands of Daria Gavrilova.
To see Sharapova relaxing on the beach in March seems to indicate she is completely at ease with her circumstances, in the face of criticisms that she is a cheater.
But it's also an odd sight to see Sharapova on vacation during the middle of tennis season.
