P.K. Subban was shockingly traded from the Canadiens to the Predators last month.
The Montreal blue liner was dealt to Nashville in exchange for veteran defenseman Shea Weber on June 29 in a blockbuster move. Prior to the trade being complete, rumors had surfaced that Subban might be on the move.
As the dust settles over one of this offseason's biggest trades, Subban has denied rumors that a rift in the locker room led the Canadiens to deal their franchise player.
"I'd have to disagree with that," Subban told Sportsnet. "We're all different, but at the end of the day, I'd like to hope these guys respect me and I respect them and that's really what it's been built on."
There was speculation during the Canadiens' locker cleanout back in April that Subban and captain Max Pacioretty had issues between them. Both men have publicly denied these claims.
Subban lamented not being able to bring Montreal its 25th Stanley Cup during his tenure there, but also spoke glowingly about his experiences. Subban played in the Eastern Conference Final twice with Montreal and won the Norris Trophy as the NHL's best defenseman in 2013.
"My memories of being a Montreal Canadian are all good," he said. "I am leaving the Montreal Canadiens, happy about playing there for six seasons and wearing the jersey. I can't comment on coaching decisions, management decisions, that's not on me. Whatever things are said about me, I can't comment on me either because I'm not saying them. At the end of the day, I just focused on what I could control, and while I was here that was how I played."
Subban, 27, was selected in the second round of the 2007 NHL Draft by the Canadiens and is coming off of a season where he notched six goals and a team-high 45 assists. In 434 career games for Montreal, Subban has 63 goals, 215 assists and 278 points while rating a plus-35.
