The Red Sox defeated the Yankees, 5-3, on Friday night and followed it up with a 5-2 victory on Saturday afternoon. Boston has used the long ball to haunt its Bronx rivals. Ryan Hanigan, Travis Shaw and Xander Bogaerts each went deep in Friday's game, while Sandy Leon hit a homer Saturday and drove in four of his team's five runs.
New York received homers from lead-off hitter Brett Gardner and No. 9 batter Chase Headley in Saturday's game, but has only mustered up five runs and nine hits thorugh the first two games of this series.
David Price (9-6, 4.34 ERA) takes the ball for Boston in this final game, while New York counters with Masahiro Tanaka (6-2, 3.23). The Yankees tagged Price for six runs and seven hits at Yankee Stadium back in May. Price is tops in the American League with 140 strikeouts this season,
Tanaka, who owns a 4.79 ERA against the Red Sox in his career, will look to be a stopper for the Bronx Bombers.
Tanaka will face a potent Red Sox lineup, spearheaded by David Ortiz, who leads the MLB with a .423 on-base pecentage, .670 slugging percentage and a 1.093 OPS. His .330 batting average ranks fifth in the league, while Mookie Betts (120) and Bogaerts (118) rank second and third, respectively, in hits.
The Red Sox (51-38) enter Sunday two games behind the Orioles (53-36) in the AL East, while the Yankees (44-46) are 9.5 games back in the divison. Boston owns a two-game lead over Toronto (51-42) for the top Wild Card spot in the AL.
