David Ortiz, Write-In Candidate, Finishes Third In Boston's Mayoral Race [VIDEO]

Fresh off of leading the Boston Red Sox to a World Series championship, Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz placed third in the city's race for mayor this week.

According to the Boston Herald, hundreds of locals wrote the Series MVP's name into the ballotbox when they cast their vote on Tuesday in a much anticipated election to replace longtime city Mayor Thomas M.Menino.

John Guifoil, a spokesman for the mayor, told The Herald the names of several Red Sox players were added as write-in candidates, with Ortiz by far garnering the most votes.

"While not official, David Ortiz led the pack," Guifoil told The Herald. "He got the most votes of any Red Sox players.". Local election law stipulates that city officials can only certify a write-in vote if the candidate requests it.

Democrat Martin J. Walsh was officially elected to replace Menino, but it seems safe to assume if Ortiz continues to hit the way he did against St. Louis is the Series he will remain number one in the hearts of Red Sox fans.

In leading the Sox to a 4-2 series win, Ortiz hit a blistering .688, reaching base in 19 of 25 plate appearances and driving in six runs. He also earned a Silver Slugger award on Thursday yesterday for his season-long efforts.
