David Nelson was very happy as a member of the Buffalo Bills until he found out the feeling wasn't mutual.
The New York Daily News and the New Jersey Star-Ledger reported Monday that Nelson, now a member of the New York Jets, has been looking forward to Sunday's meeting with his former team for quite some time and has plenty of motivation to play the game.
The wide receiver spent three seasons with the Bills, and in 2011 he had 61 receptions for 658 yards and five touchdowns for Buffalo.
Nelson, however, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the Bills' 2012 season opener and was lost for the year. The Bills declined to re-sign him in the offseason, jump-starting his path to the Jets' organization.
"For them it was a business decision; for me, I took it personally," Nelson told the Star-Ledger. "I thought we had developed a great relationship over there so I could get a phone call or at least some acknowledgement. That decision is driving me and motivating me every day since. It has made me the player I am today."
Nelson spoke fondly of his time with Buffalo but was upset with the way the Bills broke it off with him.
The news outlets reported that Nelson found out they weren't tendering him a contract on Twitter while attending a Chicago Blackhawks game. He said he was given no explanation.
"I found out through Twitter, like a lot of other things in life," Nelson said, according to the Star-Ledger.
And he has been focused on this game ever since he signed with the Jets on Oct. 2
"It's going to be an emotional game, it's going to be a fun game," Nelson told the Daily News. "This game holds a little more in my heart than most others. That's just the way it is."
Nelson has played five games for New York, starting two, and has 16 receptions for 199 yards since hooking up with quarterback Geno Smith.
