Jameis Winston News Update: Florida State Quaterback Thought He Was Cleared Of Sex Charges [VIDEO]

Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston was told as recently as in February that the 2012 sexaul assault allegations popping up in current news reports had been closed, according to USA TODAY Sports.

Winston, a leading Heisman Trophy candidate for the country's No. 2 ranked team, was told about a week after being contacted by Tallahassee police that he was no longer considered a suspect, according to his attorney Tim Jansen.

"I talked to the police officer," Jansen told the newspaper. "He said the case had been closed. I don't know of any reason for reopening it. We've been cooperating with the law-enforcement agencies and we're hoping to get a quick resolution in favor of Mr. Winston."

No charges have been formally lodged against Winston and school officials announced in a statement that his status with the team has not been affected. In a complaint filed on Dec. 7, 2012, the alleged victim told police she was attacked between 1:30 a.m. and 2 a.m. and had been drinking before and during the incident.

"The case is open and active and the victim is working with the State Attorney's Office, TPD spokesman David Northway told USA TODAY.

Jansen later told the newspaper he has provided eyewitness affidavits to prosecutors he described as "witnesses who were present who can provide vital information."
